How I've grown!

The hixson seminar has help me grow into the college atmosphere. Through the coures of the semester, they have taught use very useful things that will and are beneficial to me and the rest of the class. They have taught and shown many different ways to study for tests, and how to become more indepent as we have begun our journey. Being here at Iowa State has made me more indepentdant upon my actions. You have to know when to call it a day, and when to push yourself to get something done with all the distractions around you. Everything here is based off your previous actions, so you have to be sure to make the right decision which goes with the independance. Although the semester has been an exciting adventure thus far, there is more yet to come.

Diversity Event.

On Novemcer 3rd, 2011, I attended Clayton Anderson's presentation.  Clay, as he like to be called, was born in Omaha, Nebraska.  He recived his Masters in Areospace Engineering from Iowa State University in 1983.  From there he began work at the Johnson Space Center.  He spend a toal of 167 days in space on two trips.  His longest trip was his 5 month, or 152 days, in 2007. While there, he and his crew worked fixing the space station.  He was the appointed mission specialist on this trip where he preformed multiple space walks. He described their living habits as 60 minutes of light to 30 minutes of darkness. When reentering the atmosphere, two sonic booms can be heard. This is due to the length of the shuttle, which is 122 feet. Clay also talked about commercial fight possibly being availible in the near future.  TIme is unknown but they are shooting for the year 2016.

Hixson Award

Through all the schoarship I recieved last year, the Hixson Scholarship has meant the most to me.  It has and still is allowing me to focus on my school work reather than having a job and trying to pay for my tuition, thus taking time from my class work.  It is also benificial being a Hixson Scholar as they are there to help you get through college by offering one free tutor per a semester, a lab only for Hixson Scholars, and free printing.  It was also a deciding factor on weather or not I attended a four year college or a community college.  The Hixson award is also one of great honnor as only 100 Iowa senior recieve this award each year.  To be one of the 100 from 2011 is very special knowing that there were others that had also applied but didn't recive it.  I am also glad that I recived this award because of the friendships that I have made this far with other Hixson Scholars.  I'm sure these will be life long friendship that I would not of had without reciving this award.

What did you learn? How did you feel about engaging in this particular medium? How can social media help you reach your goals? You also read a few articles about social media-- and how it's being used around the world. What about these readings was surprising to you? What insights did you gain in reading these articles?

In today's society, social media is a big part. Newer and better thing keep being created and what was new yesterday is old today. Social media is spreading as fast as a forest fire and seems to have no end. Phones, computers, tv's, and gaming systems continually keep enhancing their quality and reducing their sizes. The internet has also evolved and is a large area where employment/employeers can be found and researched.
Engaging in this medium was actually fairly easy. Looking for companies/employeers that hired/employed people with the same degree that you are studing for. As the internet has expanded so have the companies looking to hire so there was information everywhere, plus my major has a very wide range of possiblities to explore.
I never would of thought that facebook could ruin so many relationships, but as I look back it does. We hardly talk to anyone over the phone, or meet up with friends to go out and eat and catch up on things that we haven't been around for. Everything has moved to the internet where as the facebook article explained people become someone that they're not.
I have learned that not everyone cares what your doing but yet they still want to be friends on facebook. Weather they just like to complain about a status that you posted, or they're just jelous of you and continue to visit your page to find some way to start something. Not everyone is alike and if you don't like what htey are doing ingnore it, or delete them from your friends list and stop complaining about it.

MBTI results

My MBTI results were very acurate. Its suprising how acurately they are able to relate to you. My MBTI results have me classified as a ESTJ, this stands for Extraversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging. ESTJ is one of 16 types that the Myers-Briggs evaluation indicates. An ESTJ type finds their energy from other people and like to deal with facts. This is very true as I like to be around people and find facts more interesting than theories and ideas.
MBTI has results for everyone, it can tell you how you study and learn best based on the way you answer their survey. It is amazing how they can depict a person's type and have it be very close to the way that person actually is. ESTJs are doers who roll up their sleeves, dig in, and proceed directly to get the job done, which is how i prefer to get thing done.

My Bucket List!

I believe that everyone has a "bucket list". You might hear people talking about it every now and again, but most people tend to keep their life long goals to themselves. Bucket lists can be ever change because as you grow and get older new thing seem more interesting to you than they did five to ten years ago.
My current short term bucket list entails: graduating from college and getting a job, having an internship, getting a racecar, and making either the ISU football or wrestling squad. Graduating college is obviously a very big goal but one that can be easily achieve through work and effort put into work. The job also goes with college as once you finish your schooling a job is where you look to next. The other two on my list are for recreation fun. I love playing sports and I feel that it would be an awesome accomplishment to say that i played on a NCAA Division 1 team. And last but not least in my short term goals a racecar. Working on racecars and being at the track is such a thrill to me. My dad and uncle raced 15 to 20 years ago and I think its one of those traits that are passed down.
Long term goals can be hard look forward to as life is ever changing, but it gives you plenty of time to go after them. Some long term goals I would like to have would be to: establish a family after getting a job, be able to stay out of debt, and travel to Germany, and a few other European countries. Establishing a family is a goal that will take place in roughtly 8-10 years once my feet are set in a job and you know what to expect with the job. Staying out of debt goes with the job, if you get a good job that pays all your bills and leaves you enough to live on well where you dont need to borrow money, staying out of debt should be no problem. And traveling is just something to look towards doing once you have money and time to when the kids leave the house. I have always wanted to go toGermany and see the history that was left the from WW2 and you might as well just travel the other countries around there that you want to go to while you're there.
As I said before, "Bucket Lists are ever changing." I may someday not want any of the things I just said, and most likly there will be more added to the list. Also everyone has different dreams or things that they want on their bucket list which create individuality.

A Time for the Best

There is always a time when people are at the best, and those times come periodically throughout your life. Looking back to when I feel that I was at my best was not to long ago. It happened in my senior season of wrestling when I achieved my first winning record. Wrestling to me could be comparable to starting your freshman year of college as I will explainin the following paragraphs.
Wrestling is an individual sport that takes a lot of effort and determination to be put into the sport. In other terms, what you put into to it is what you will get out of it. I think that the mentality got to me in my senior season that this would be my last. That I'd better do the best I could, and do everything  to make myself better. I went from having 6 total wins in my first three years to having 28 in my senior year; wrestling in a mental sport, think positive things, positive things will happen.
College is very similar, you put the work and dedication into learning, you will go far in life. College is your individual sport where you learn a skill to use for the rest of your life. The hours of studying, doning homework and projects are relateable to the hours of sweat and hard work you put into on the mat. Your grades and possible careers are on the line as a season record.
I may have not had the season turn out the way I was hoping it would but the results of quadroupling my wins in one season is a stunning achievement. The lesson that can be learned from this situation is, that you are the one controling your life. You alone can change it, and mold it to be the best possible outcome.
